Buying Your First Fund

Choosing Funds explains how a fund gets on the list. This module shows how you buy one: open a brokerage account, put money in, place the order, and what to do after. Every step is yours. The basic path is similar at Canadian self-directed brokerages, but the screens, fees, timing and available features differ.

By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:

  • Open your chosen account type at a brokerage.
  • Explain why transferred money remains cash until you place a buy order.
  • Tell a market order from a limit order.
  • Place a fund order after checking its ticker and exact name.
  • Recognise leftover cash, whole-share rounding and settlement as normal order mechanics.
